We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Empowering Game Design Education with Transformative Role-playing Games (EDGE) — An Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnership in Higher Education! The EDGE consortium consists of Uppsala University (Sweden), Turku University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Dragons Nest (Greece), Chaos League (Italy), and Avalon Larp Studio (Norway).
EDGE is creating empowering game design education and innovation the burgeoning field of Transformative Game Design. The target audience for our educational materials are life-long learners in helping professions who use analog role-playing games (RPGs) as vehicles for change, e.g., educators, therapists, youth workers, spiritual directors.
Projected outcomes of the project include enhanced Master’s curriculum, a Bachelor’s course, a textbook, an implementation guide, a tech workshop and toolkit, and a two-day larp teaching principles of transformative game design through play.
EDGE will infuse this curriculum with expertise on transformative game design praxis from specialists from three higher education institutions: Uppsala University and Turku University of Applied Sciences. EDGE also brings together three larp organizations in Europe with both practical and academic specialties: Dragons Nest, Chaos League, and Avalon Larp Studio.
Together, the members of the consortium bring knowledge of role-playing games designed for transformational impacts in leisure, educational, and therapeutic settings, as well as the application of advanced technology in games.
Our Kickoff will take place at Uppsala University Campus Gotland in Visby, Sweden from November 14-15, 2023. We are so grateful to Erasmus+ and the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) for this opportunity.
