Description:
Larp and community are two very related and interdependent concepts. If in fact larps are the fuel of community, developing reflections and connections. It is equally true that without community none of this would be possible. The concept of community can be analyzed from many perspectives. In this talk, Cosmo Esposito and Alessandro Giovannucci share their considerations based on their experiences from researchers, larp design, and anthropology. Several case studies will be presented in order to illustrate the moments of intersection between larp, narrative, and personal experiences. If larp is made by players, it is also true that larp itself shapes players through interactions and shared experiences. Expect a dynamic and interactive talk, open to comments from the audience.

Presenters bio:
Cosmo Esposito, MA student in anthropology and a creative force in Chaos League, blends their expertise in game design with a deep commitment to exploring identities through live-action role-plays. Passionate about fostering open conversations and experimenting with new existential ideas, Cosmo leverages larp as a medium for mindfulness practice and profound engagement. As the co-founder of Project Campanula, in collaboration with ArciGay Palermo, they focus on challenging the current socio-political landscape, enhancing the resistance of individuals within the lgbtqia+ community. Project Campanula (https://progettocompanula.cargo.site) stands as a testament to their dedication to using larp as a collaborative tool for research, experience, and storytelling. Cosmo’s work is driven by a desire to amplify marginalized voices, creating spaces and tools that facilitate understanding of the human network. Their initiatives promote intimacy, community, and togetherness, offering a safe environment for identity exploration and the forging of meaningful connections.

Alessandro Giovannucci is an award-winning Italian larp designer and theorist. He co-founded the larp collective Chaos League and wrote the Southern Way Manifesto. His well-known international larps include Sahara Expedition, The Secrets We Keep, and Miskatonic University. Alessandro worked also in tabletop games and mixed/augmented reality, working with museums, institutions, universities, and European projects. He’s regularly invited to hold talks, classes and workshops about audience engagement, collaborative storytelling and interactive performances. His projects have been featured in multiple newspapers and magazines (New Yorker, The Guardian, Wired, Radio Rai3). He’s also a musician and a lecturer. Curious, friendly, and proudly antifa.

This series is hosted by the Games & Society Lab at the Department of Game Design, Uppsala University Campus Gotland. The series explores the use of analog role-playing games as vehicles for lasting personal and social change.
