Discussion 3: Implementing Transformative Leisure Role-playing Games

Read Simo Järvelä’s “How Real Is Larp?” (2 pages) and Leïla Teteau-Surel’s “10 Steps for Integrating Transformative Experiences.”

Then read one (1) article from the Recommended Readings under each of the following categories for a total of two (2) articles: Bleed and Post-game Emotional Reactions.

* * *

Then, answer the following questions:

  1. Summarize the concepts presented in the article you read from the Bleed section in 3-4 sentences. Did you find the arguments presented persuasive? Why or why not.
  2. Considering the information you read this week, how might you implement a game designed for transformative impacts that maximizes the potential for bleed responsibly? Provide specific examples that would occur during the game aside from safety guidelines, such as storytelling techniques, logistical choices, etc.
  3. Considering the information you read this week, what sorts of risks might occur when playing emotionally intense role-playing games? What sort of after effects have been reported? Be specific.
    • Have you experienced these sorts of emotions after a game?
    • If so, please describe. If not, why not?
  4. Considering the information you read this week, how might you implement a game designed for transformative impacts that helps players integrate their experience. Provide specific examples that would occur after the game. You can adapt ideas from Teteau-Surel’s player suggestions or offer your own, but the emphasis should be on structures you can provide as a facilitator.

Finally, respond to at least two (2) of your peers in Ask a Question, Answer a Question format.
