Discussion 2: Leveling Up Role-playing Communities
Watch Caro Murphy’s “Creating Transformative Communities” and Diana J. Leonard’s “Promoting Healthy Communities in Larp.”
Read Lizzie Stark’s “Building Larp Communities: Social Engineering for Good” and Laura Wood’s “Why Larp Community Matters and How We Can Improve It.”
Then, answer the following questions for each video and reading:
- Describe at least one (1) problem with RPG communities present in the reading or video, whether implicit or explicit. In other words, what problem(s) are these recommendations trying to solve? You may need to extrapolate.
- Have you experienced or witnessed this problem in your own communities, whether in role-playing games or otherwise? If so, describe.
- If not, why?
- Describe at least two (2) solutions recommended by each author or presenter.
- How might you implement these solutions into your own community building practices, if at all?
- If you would not implement them, why?
- After addressing each text or video, answer the following question: Are there any recommendations you would add that were not mentioned by the authors?
- If so, describe one (1).
