Cultivating Transformational Communities

Reflection Journal 1: Safety, Autobiographical Games, and You

Watch Bowman’s “Safety in Role playing Games Part V: Cultivating Safer Communities.”

Read Kim’s “Writing an Autobiographical Game.”

If needed, review Bowman’s “Safety in Role playing Games Part I.”

Then, answer the following questions:

  1. Describe one (1) safety issue you have witnessed or experienced in communities to which you belong, whether role-playing game related or otherwise.
    • If you have not witnessed or experienced safety issues, why do you think that might be?
  2. Describe one (1) practice that Bowman discusses that you have seen or implemented yourself in communities to which you belong, whether role-playing game related or otherwise.
    • How effective was this strategy? Be specific.
    • If you have not seen these practices, which one (1) did you find the most surprising or intriguing? Be specific.
  3. What one (1) practice would you like to see implemented more widely, whether in your own experience or from the video? Be specific.
  4. In 1-2 sentences in your own words, describe autobiographical games as discussed by Kim. Have you ever designed a game with autobiographical elements, whether in this course or elsewhere? If so, describe.
    • If not, why not?
  5. Consider an aspect of your own life you would be interested in exploring through role-playing game design. Briefly brainstorm how you would integrate this aspect into a game, whether directly or metaphorically.
