Cultivating Transformational Communities

Submission of Major Assignment 1: Autobiographical Game Design Document

For Major Assignment 1, you will design an autobiographical nano-game and submit your Game Design Document. The purpose of this nano-game is to explore topics related to social identity with respect to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

Choose one (1) social identity associated with you, meaning an identity that is socially recognized and/or imposed upon you. This identity could be one that confers privilege upon you, marginalized you, or both. Consider an aspect you would feel comfortable with the members of your group role-playing, whether as someone with that identity or without it.

Examples include:

    • Gender
    • Sexuality
    • Race/Ethnicity
    • Ability
    • Neurotypicality/neurodiversity
    • Class
    • Appearance
    • Religion
    • Social Status
    • Cultural affiliation 
    • Subcultural affiliation
    • Any other significant factor.

Game play should not exceed 45 minutes and feedback should not exceed 15 minutes including workshop and debrief, for a total of one (1) hour maximum per game.

Your nano-game should include:

      • Instructions on how you would like players to engage with this content. Instructions on what types of play to avoid.
      • A specific desired transformative impact or learning objective.
      • At least one (1) workshop activity that will guide players on how to play the game. 
      • At least one (1) emotional, intellectual, or educational debrief question related to your desired transformative impact or learning objective.
      • Description of your plan for holding the transformational container in terms of safety, including guidelines, mechanics, negotiations, aftercare, etc.

Your Game Design Document should contain all the instructions for your nano-game that facilitators and participants need to play. These instructions should not exceed 1000 words in Times New Roman 12 point font.
