Introduction to Transformative Game Design

Discussion 8: Research Through Design

Read “7.3a: Research Through Design” from Bowman et al.,’s “Chapter 7: Research in Transformative Game Design” in Transformative Role-playing Game Design.

Choose one (1) item from the Research Through Design Method list to examine.

Watch Josefin Westborg’s “Playtesting” and “How to Be a Good Playtester.”

Then, answer the following questions:

  1. After watching Westborg’s videos, what concepts do you think will be most important for your playtesting process? Be specific.
  2. Have you engaged in Research Through Design before, either intuitively or deliberately?
    • If so, describe your process. Did you learn any new steps to the process? Be specific.
    • If not, what aspects might be rewarding when engaging in the process for this project? Be specific.
  3. Consider your current game design.
    • What insights do you most want to discover through the Research Through Design process?
    • How will you structure your feedback questions for your participants to gain these insights?

Finally, respond to at least three (3) of your peers in Ask a Question, Answer a Question format.
