Transformative Game Design 2

Discussion 1: Basics of Scaling and Implementing Transformative RPGs

Choose (1) of the following: 

  • Watch Sarah Lynne Bowman’s “Transformative Role-playing Games: Implementation Basics” (1 hr 12 min); or
  • Read Bowman’s “Chapter 1” in Implementing Transformative Game Design (pp. 27-54).

Note: If you took a break from the Certificate Track and are rejoining us this semester, please add a brief introduction at the beginning of this post.

Then, answer the following questions:

  1. After examining these materials, identify two (2) aspects of implementation that you have considered the least when facilitating role-playing games? You can use outside experiences from facilitation or from your nano-games in this class if necessary. For each question, answer the following questions in paragraph form (3-4 sentences maximum).
    1. Why have you considered this aspect the least? Be specific.
    2. What problems could emerge if you do not plan for this aspect in advance? Be specific.
  2. Brainstorm a scaled up version of one of the games you designed in this programme focusing exclusively on these two aspects. how does considering these aspects affect your design? Be specific.
