Reflection Journal 3: Cultural Role-playing and You
Watch “Experimental Anthropology” by Kaisa Kangas (8 min).Â
Read Whitney Beltrán’s “Why Minority Settings in RPGs Matter” and Ajit George’s “The Beautiful Challenge Of Bringing India To D&D’s Ravenloft” and Shoshana Kessock’s “Cultural Appropriation and Larp” (19 pages).
Then, answer the following questions:
- What sorts of cultures have you played in role-playing games before? Describe what playing these cultures was like.
- If you do not have experienced role-playing cultures, what cultures have you played in other games? Be specific
- According to Beltrán and George, describe three (3) strategies designers can use to integrate minority or non-Western settings in role-playing games.
- Considering Kangas’ video and Kessock’s article, what risks do you think might emerge in terms of cultural appropriation when designing cultures in larps? Be specific.
- Do you have any concerns or fears around including existing cultures in role-playing games as a designer? If so, please describe.
- Consider ways you might address these concerns and move forward with the design process (if possible).
