Overview: Styles and Cultures of Design

Welcome to our unit on styles and cultures of role-playing game design! As we have discussed before, role-playing games emerge from specific design and play communities. These groups create their own cultures and styles, which get reproduced in games and are reflected in the discourses around them. As these communities are numerous, in this unit, you will have an opportunity to Choose Your Own Adventure in terms of which design and play communities you wish to explore. You will summarize the work that you read and present it to the group in your discussion posts. As your peers may not read the same articles as you do, you will describe thoroughly what you have learned for everyone’s benefit.

In this Unit, we will cover:

  • Styles and Cultures of Design in Tabletop
  • Styles and Cultures of Design in Freeform
  • Styles and Cultures of Design in Larp
