Transformative Game Design 1

Reflection Journal 1: Emotional Debriefing and You

Examine one (1) item from the Recommended Materials list under Effects Studies in Unit 3

Read Brown’s “Post-Play Activities for Larp: Methods and Challenges.”

Familiarize yourself with the materials under “Reflecting for Self-Awareness” from the Reflector’s Toolbox.

Optional: Watch Bowman’s “Safety in Role playing Games Part IV: After the Game.”

  1. Read your chosen article from the Effects Studies section in Unit 3. Apply the Toulmin method to establish the main claim, the reasoning, the evidence, and any objections and rebuttals presented (4-5 sentences maximum).
    • Do you find this claim persuasive in the way the author is presenting it? Why or why not?
  2. Reflect upon your experiences with role-playing games, including this course. Discuss one (1) memory of emotional processing after a game in whatever depth you prefer in 1-3 sentences.
    • How commonly do you experience emotional debriefing and shared reflection within your role-playing group(s)?
    • If you do not have such a memory, why might emotional processing and reflection be helpful in your own experience? Be specific.
  3. Choose between either the #Feminism scenario you played in the last course or in this course. After reading Brown’s article, brainstorm an emotional debrief after looking at the materials we have provided. Describe the structure of the debrief in 3-4 sentences. Include one (1) emotional debriefing question tailored for this scenario using an example from the Reflector’s Toolkit as a baseline.
