Reflection Journal 3: Cultural Role-playing and You

Watch “Experimental Anthropology” by Kaisa Kangas (8 min).

Read Whitney Beltrán’s “Why Minority Settings in RPGs Matter” and Ajit George’s “The Beautiful Challenge Of Bringing India To D&D’s Ravenloft” and Shoshana Kessock’s “Cultural Appropriation and Larp” (19 pages).

Then, answer the following questions:

  1. What sorts of cultures have you played in role-playing games before? Describe what playing these cultures was like.
    • If you do not have experienced role-playing cultures, what cultures have you played in other games? Be specific
  2. According to Beltrán and George, describe three (3) strategies designers can use to integrate minority or non-Western settings in role-playing games.
  3. Considering Kangas’ video and Kessock’s article, what risks do you think might emerge in terms of cultural appropriation when designing cultures in larps? Be specific.
  4. Do you have any concerns or fears around including existing cultures in role-playing games as a designer? If so, please describe.
    • Consider ways you might address these concerns and move forward with the design process (if possible).
