Discussion 6: Therapeutic Role-playing Game Design

Watch Diakolambrianou’s “Beyond the Couch: Psychotherapy and Live Action Role-playing.”

Read Bartenstein’s “Larp in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Making Larp a Standard Method.”

  1. After reviewing Diakolambrianou’s video, describe three (3) ways in which psychotherapeutic concepts can help inform therapeutic role-playing game design. Be specific.
  2. After reviewing Bartenstein’s article, how does the author apply principles in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to larp design? Give examples.
  3. In one paragraph (4-6 sentences), brainstorm a design of a therapeutic role-playing game using one (1) of the concepts described in these materials, including the narrative, the therapeutic goals, the framing, and the target group.
    • Would you need support from a mental health professional to run this game? If so, how would you include them in the process?

Finally, respond to at least two (2) of your peers in Ask a Question, Answer a Question format.
